A crucible is a ceramic or metal container in which metals or other substances may be melted or subjected to very high temperatures. It is used in the laboratory to contain chemical compounds when heated to extremely high temperatures. Crucibles are available in several sizes and typically come with a correspondingly-sized lid. When heated over a flame, the crucible is often held inside a pipeclay triangle held on a tripod.
