Sulfur is a chemical element with the symbol S and atomic number 16. It is abundant, multivalent, and nonmetallic. Under normal conditions, sulfur atoms form cyclic octatomic molecules with a chemical formula S8. Elemental sulfur is a bright yellow, crystalline solid at room temperature. Sulfur is the tenth most common element by mass in the universe and the fifth most common on Earth. Though sometimes found in pure, native form, sulfur on Earth usually occurs as sulfide and sulfate minerals.

Pnictogens and Chalcogens

A pnictogen is one of the chemical elements in group 15 of the periodic table. This group is also known as the nitrogen family. The chalcogens are the chemical elements in group 16 of the periodic table. This group is also known as the oxygen family.

Pnictogens consist of the elements nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), arsenic (As), antimony (Sb), bismuth (Bi),  and perhaps the chemically uncharacterized synthetic element moscovium (Mc).
